ABSTRACT

The effects of single and double infection of Bulinus. truncatus with Schistosoma haematobium and/or Echinostorna recurvatum on free amino acid and some enzymes activity were hereby studied. The results indicated a disruption in the snail metabolism due to exposure to S. haematobium and E. recurvatuin miracidia and this effect was more pronounced in case of double exposure to the two parasites. The results obtained also revealed results showed that the infection rate of B. truncatus snails with E. recurvatum was higher than that by S. haematobium. Moreover, E recurvatum exerted a negative that free amino acids showed variation in their concentrations and percentages of TFAA in tissue of infected snails with two parasites as compared to control snails. Aspartic, Glutamic, Glyc ine, Threonine, Alanine, Methio-nine, Cystine, Tyrosine, Phenylalanine, Lysine and Luecine were increased in the tissue, but Serine, Histidine, Arginine, Proline, Valine and Isolucecine were decreased. The glucose, lipid and cholesterol level in the haemolymph of infected snails was increased, while the protein and glycogen content decreased in soft tissues. A significant elevation in the levels of Aspartate aminotransferase [ASAT] and alanine aminotransferase [ALAT] enzymes was recorded in heamolymph and tissues of exposed snail than unexposed. There were significant increases in the levels of acid and alkaline phosphatases enzymes in exposed snails

ABSTRACT

The construction of the Diama dam on the Senegal river, the Manantali dam on the Bafing river, Mali and the ensuing ecological changes have led to a massive outbreak of Schistosoma mansoni in Northern Senegal, associated with high intensity of infections, due to intense transmission, and the creation of new foci of S. haematobium. Data on the vectorial capacity of Biomphalaria pfeifferi from Ndombo, near Richard Toll, Senegal are presented with sympatric and allopatric (Cameroon) S. mansoni. Comparisons are made on infectivity, cercarial production, chronobiology of cercarial emergence and longevity of infected snails. Recent data on the intermediate host specificity of different isolates of S. haematobium from the Lower and Middle Valley of the Senegal river basin (SRB) demonstrate the existence of at least two strains of S. haematobium. The role of Bulinus truncatus in the transmission of S. haematobium in the Lower and Middle Valleys of the SRB is reviewed. Both S. haematobium and S. mansoni are transmitted in the same foci in some areas of the SRB

ABSTRACT

El envejecimiento del medio de cultivo da como resultado la inhibición de la oviposición en B. tropicus. Los cambios en el oxígeno y en los niveles iónicos del agua de cría durante el período de acondicionamiento no aparecen ser los responsables de la inhibición y de las fluctuaciones de la temperatura ambiente, y no tienen un efecto facilitador en la oviposición inhibida. Los resultados están de acuerdo con la sugerencia de que alguna clase de compuesto inhibitorio sea eliminado por los caracoles en el agua de cultivo

ABSTRACT

The prepatent period, death rate, infection rate and cercarial production of S. haematobium in B. truncatus maintained under different constant temperatures were studied. The cercarial production varied greatly in infected snails at different constant temperatures. It varied from 874.65 to 23.5. The highest cercarial output was in snails kept at 25°C and the lowest at 18°C. Some infected snails maintained at 19°C, 25°C and 28°C discharged cercariae for more than ten weeks from their first shedding
